Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean took to Twitter to squash rumours that the Fugees were getting back together.
We have NYC’s DJ Funkmaster Flex to thank for the misunderstanding. The Hot 97 DJ dropped what appeared to be a new Fugees track on Saturday (July 15), leading some Fugees to believe that the trio were back in the studio together.
Sadly for fans of Wyclef, Pras and Ms. Hill, the latter took to her personal Twitter account to inform fans that it was an old track that had been leaked and played by Flex.
“The ‘new’ Fugees song is indeed an old track played around with back in the day in the lab,” she tweeted.
Lauryn also added an air of mystery to the situation by adding “Not sure who leaked it, but I have my suspicions.”
That’s all she had to say on the matter, but Wyclef backed her up, writing. “The song leaked today is an old one from past studio days. I don’t condone it in anyway and had no clue it was coming.”
Oh well….till next time. Maybe!
The Fugees released two studio albums. ‘Blunted on Reality’ their first was around since 1992. Due to record label disputes the trio eventually dropped it in ’94. It made a small splash in comparison to their follow up effort ‘The Score’ which came out in 1996.
Upon its release, ‘The Score’ was a commercial success, peaking at the number one spot on both the Billboard 200, and the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart (it was a number-one album on the latter in 1996 on the year-end chart). The singles “Killing Me Softly”, “Fu-Gee-La”, and “Ready or Not” also achieved notable chart success.
